RubberDucks Jump on the Ponies Early and Often, Remain Unbeaten with 9-2 Win

The RubberDucks were off to the races right from the first inning in their 9-2 victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, thanks to timely two-out hitting and a big fly from Mike Rivera.

Turning Point

Already holding the 1-0 lead, the RubberDucks filled the box score in the bottom of the third inning thanks to four runs following a Rumble Ponies fielding error with two outs. The RubberDucks loaded the bases in the third inning when Alex Call reached on an error, Andruw Monasterio walked, and Trenton Brooks was hit by a pitch. Chris Roller plated Alex Call with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left center field. After a Will Benson walk, Jose Fermin doubled the Ducks' lead by lacing a liner into right field which scored Monasterio and Brooks, bringing the Akron lead to 4-1. The scoring finished up after Mike Rivera's hard hit ground ball resulting in a fielding error that scored Will Benson to make it 5-1 after three.

Mound Presence

Tanner Tully shined all night long, only surrendering one run courtesy of a leadoff Mark Vientos home run in the fourth inning. Allowing five total hits in Tully's first start of the season, only two runner reached scoring position, but Tanner promptly ended subsequent rallies with a strikeout and a slow roller to the shortstop. In relief of the starter, Skylar Arias made quick work of Binghamton batters in the sixth, striking out the side before working himself into trouble in the seventh. After striking out the first batter of the inning, Arias allowed the next four Ponies to reach via three walks and hit by pitch. Nick Mikolajchak came on in relief to strike out two hitters in a row to keep the score at 9-2 in Akron's favor.

Duck Tales

Jose Fermin's hot start to the season continued Thursday as the Akron shortstop posted a 2-for-4 night including a two-run single and a fifth inning double to bring in his third RBI of the night. Catcher Mike Rivera got his first start of the season behind the dish and made the most of it with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, bring the Ducks' lead to 8-1. Richie Polacios added another run for the RubberDucks in the sixth finding the outfield grass in right to score Alex Call and extend the lead to 9-1.

Notebook

Tanner Tully picks up his first win of the 2021 campaign after posting an 8-11 record with a 4.38 Earned Run Average across 23 starts for the RubberDucks in 2019 ... Jose Fermin picks up his first multi-hit game of his Double-A career, bring his average to .429 through two games played for the young shortstop ... Six out of the nine runs scored by the RubberDucks came with two outs in the inning, which brings their total hitting with two outs to .241 on the season with eight runs on seven hits ... Time of Game: 3:11 ... Attendance: 1177.

The Ducks and Rumble Ponies will open the weekend portion fo at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Canal Park. Alex Royalty (first start) will start for Akron against Binghamton's Adam Oller (first start).
