Akron RubberDucks News Release

Richmond's Austin Slater went 3-4, with two RBI, and six Richmond pitchers combined on a two-hitter, as the Flying Squirrels blanked the Akron RubberDucks, 8-0, Tuesday night at The Diamond.

Turning Point

The Flying Squirrels (50-45) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with an unearned run against Shawn Morimando (6-10). Slater led off with a single, and moved to second on a dropped pick-off throw. After a pair of groundouts, Slater was on third base with two outs. Morimando induced a routine grounder to third by Jesus Galindo, but Akron's Yandy Diaz mishandled the ball for an error, allowing Slater to score for a 1-0, Flying Squirrels lead.

Mound Presence

Morimando deserved better, but was saddled with the loss despite allowing just three hits and that solitary, unearned run in his 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. Zach Nuding provided scoreless relief over 1 1/3 innings, but the Flying Squirrels rallied for seven runs in the eighth off righthander Louis Head to break the game open. Head allowed six consecutive hits to begin the inning, capped by a two-run single by Slater.

Duck Tales

The RubberDucks (50-47) were held to just two hits. Diaz had an infield hit in the fourth, and Anthony Gallas added a single in the 9th. Ronny Rodriguez returned to the RubberDucks lineup after spending the last two weeks at the Pan Am Games. He was 0-3.
