Royals Surge Past Devils, 3-2

Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - After the Devils took a 2-0 first-period lead, Reading's Yannick Riendeau, Ben Gordon and Robert Slaney scored unanswered goals to pace a Royals 3-2 win Saturday at Sun National Bank Center. Reading's comeback victory from a two-goal deficit Saturday night comes just 17 days after the Royals climbed out of a similar 2-0 hole en route to a win in the clubs' last meeting in Trenton November 17.

Similar to the November 17 contest between the teams, Trenton opened the game's scoring early in the first period with Ryan Hayes being credited for his sixth goal of the season at 5:40. Hayes' goal, assisted by Ryan Ginand and Dave Leaderer, found its way past Ben Scrivens after Reading's Robert Slaney accidentally swept the puck past his goaltender while trying to clear a rebound from in front of his own goal.

Ahead 1-0, the Devils cashed in another first period score with Jeff Prough beating Scrivens by firing a shot through the feet of the 6'2 goaltender after receiving a pass from behind the net by Taylor Vichorek. Prough's seventh goal of the season, on the power play, was also assisted by Chase Watson, who earned his first point as a Devil on the sequence.

Down 2-0, Yannick Riendeau was the catalyst of the Royals' comeback, narrowing Trenton's lead to 2-1, 6:32 into the second period. Besides cutting Trenton's lead in half, Riendeau's strike changed the game's momentum, as the Royals outshot the Devils 16-9 in the second period after Trenton outshot Reading 23-8 in the opening period. With the momentum on his team's side, Ben Gordon beat Devils goaltender Shane Connelly with a power play goal with 3:11 remaining in the middle stanza, to tie the score 2-2.

After scoring into his own goal in the first period, Reading's Robert Slaney redeemed himself by completing the Royals comeback, scoring the eventual game-winning goal 28 seconds into the third period. The Devils propelled nine shots towards Ben Scrivens in the third period, but they couldn't tie the score as Reading held on to win 3-2.

Devils goaltender Shane Connelly made 30 saves on 33 shots, taking the loss in his Trenton debut. The Devils' record falls to 8-10-0-1 in defeat while the Royals improve to 13-7-0-0 by winning their second straight, and 10th in their last 13. The Devils are next in action Wednesday night when they battle the Elmira Jackals in Trenton at 7:00 p.m.
