Salmon Kings Sign Matt Butcher

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed rookie forward Matt Butcher for the 2010-11 season.

The native of Bellingham, WA made his Salmon Kings' debut last night after beginning his professional career earlier this season with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones. In four games in Cincinnati, Butcher recorded no points and four minutes in penalties

The 6-2, 205 lb forward spent four seasons (2006-07 thru 2009-10) with the NCAA's Northern Michigan University Wildcats prior to turning professional. In 125 career games at school he tallied 15 goals and 29 assists for 44 points while accruing 105 penalty minutes. During his time as a Wildcat, Butcher won the team's Ed Ward Most Improved Player Award in 2008

The 23-year-old Butcher began his junior hockey career in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), playing three seasons (2003-04 thru 2005-06) with the Chilliwack Chiefs. Across 165 games with the Chiefs he amassed 183 points (72g-111a) and 276 minutes in penalties. In his final season with Chilliwack Butcher recorded 101 points (38g-63a) and 109 penalty minutes in just 57 appearances, and was named the BCHL Coastal Conference's Most Valuable Player.

Butcher is a fifth-round selection (#138 overall) of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

The Salmon Kings finish their three-game set with the Stockton Thunder tonight at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Tonight's game will mark the Salmon Kings' fifth annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring new teddy bears to the game and throw their stuffed animals onto the ice after the Salmon Kings' first goal.
