Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
A six-run seventh inning for the visiting Omaha Royals (5-7) did the Albuquerque Isotopes (6-6) in as the O-Royals used the late production to cruise to a 14-6 series-ending victory Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park.
The majority of Isotopes pitching struggled on the day as Omaha teed off for 17 hits, including going 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The Isotopes managed to keep pace with Omaha, cranking out 15 hits of their own, but couldn't cash in quite as well in the clutch.
The two teams established two early ties as catcher Lucas May responded to a first-inning Omaha run with a solo shot in the bottom of the second, his first career Triple-A hit, that deadlocked the score at 1-1.
After Kila Ka'aihue muscled a two-run blast in the third to put Omaha up 3-1, Jay Gibbons delivered his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot to knot it all up again at 3-3.
The Royals loudly broke the deadlock in the fifth inning, rattling off nine straight hits and scoring four runs before an out was recorded. Mike Aviles, who fell a home run shy of the cycle, tripled in Irving Falu and Marc Maddox, who both singled to opening the inning. Ka'aihue followed with an RBI single to plate Aviles and chase starter Scott Elbert (0-1) from the game.
The O-Royals capped the inning with an RBI single from David Lough and a sacrifice fly from Cody Clark that put the 'Topes in a 7-3 hole.
Albuquerque cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a run-scoring single from Xavier Paul and a fielder's choice RBI from Prentice Redman that made it 7-5. The damage could have been much greater, however, as the Isotopes ended the inning with the bases loaded with May popping up the first pitch of his at-bat to the catcher to end the inning and quell a potential rally.
Omaha put the game out of reach by batting around in the seventh inning, plating six runs off relievers Tim Corcoran and Hyang-Nam Choi. The first three Royals reached base before back-to-back doubles from Clark and Jose Durate, a sacrifice fly from Maddox and another double via Aviles pushed across six to up the Royals lead to 14-5.
Paul added a solo home run, his third hit of the day, in the ninth to make it 14-6 and John Lindsey finished with four hits to continue his torrid hitting.
Albuquerque will hit the road for the Big Easy on Tuesday to begin a four-game series with the New Orleans Zephyrs. Right-hander Josh Lindblom (0-0, 7.88) will get the ball for the 'Topes facing Z's righty Matt DeSalvo (0-1, 9.82) with first pitch slated for 6:00 PM MT from Zephyr Field.
After eight games in New Orleans and Omaha, the 'Topes return home on April 29 for a four-game set against the Round Rock Express, Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. On-tap for the short homestand is an Isotopes hat giveaway and the first post-game fireworks show of the season. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com .
