Sky Sox Lose High-Octane Thriller, 9-8

The Sky Sox lost a barn burner at Security Service Field on Monday night, 9-8, spoiling an exceptional start by recently rostered starter Esmil Rogers.

Rogers was pulled after a masterful five innings, recording four strikeouts, walking none, and yielding just one hit.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Sox reliever Shane Lindsay entered the game, allowing the first two batters to reach on a hit by pitch and a walk before consecutive singles plated the 51s first two runs. After Jimmy Gobble was called upon with one out and two runners on, the 51s scored three more times on a single, a sacrifice fly, and a double. The score 5-1, the 51s were firmly in control for the first time since Friday night.

The Sky Sox answered back in the bottom of the seventh, however, as a Travis Metcalf single drove in Michael McKenry to make the score 5-2. An Eric Young, Jr. single put runners on the corners, allowing the Sox to score twice on back-to-back wild pitches by reliever Jesse Carlson. A Matt Miller fly out ended the inning, but Colorado Springs was back in the game, down 5-4.

The 51s exploded in the top of the eighth, however, as a Brett Wallace solo shot and J.P. Arencibia three-run blast to center extended the lead by four runs, 9-4.

Sent down quietly in the eighth, the Sky Sox rallied hard in the bottom of the ninth.

Leading off with a Jonathan Herrera walk, Travis Metcalf launched a two-run homer to left, making the score 9-6.

A Las Vegas pitching change brought in Rommie Lewis, who retired centerfielder Chris Frey for the inning's first out. An Eric Young, Jr. single followed, as did a Matt Miller walk, setting up a double by Mike Paulk that scored Young.

Down two with one out, Cole Garner reached on a fielding error by Lewis. Jay Payton grounded into a force out in the next at-bat, though Miller scored on the play to bring the Sox within one run with one out remaining, 9-8.

However, Michael McKenry ended the thrilling contest the very next at-bat on a ground out to second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir.

With the loss, the Sky Sox dropped to 6-6, while the 51s improved to 8-4. Brad Mills was credited with the win (2-0) while Shane Lindsay took the loss (0-1).

The Sky Sox will send righty Samuel Deduno (1-1, 2.00) to the mound tomorrow night to kick off the new series against Tacoma, who will start Steven Shell (0-1, 4.00).

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM at Security Service Field.
