
Royals Pick Up Goaltender; All Star Starter Returns

READING, PA â The Reading Royals have announced that goaltender Peter Hamerlik has been loaned to the Royals by the Boston Bruins of the NHL. Hamerlik had been currently assigned to the Bruins AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. In addition, the Manchester Monarchs, Reading's AHL affiliate, has returned all-star defenseman Jon Zion to the Royals.
Hamerlik, 22, a goaltender from Slovakia was drafted twice. In 2000, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round, 84th overall. Boston reselected Hamerlik in 2002 in the fifth round, 153rd overall. Last season the 6-foot-1, 190-pound netminder appeared in five games with Cincinnati of the ECHL and one game with Providence of the American Hockey League. He posted a 2-1-1 mark with the Cyclones with a 3.35 goals against average. Earlier this season, Hamerlik was loaned to the ECHL's Augusta Lynx by the Bruins. He appeared in eight contests posting a 1-5-1 record with a 3.82 goals against average. He did face the Royals on November 30 in Augusta and made 43 saves, but was defeated in overtime, 2-1. Hamerlik has also seen three games of work with the Providence Bruins and recorded a mark of 1-1-1 with a 1.91 goals against average and a .939 save percentage. The Slovakian played three seasons in Kingston in the OHL before turning pro. Zion, 23, returns to Reading after appearing in eight games with the Royals AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. The Nepean, Ontario native posted two assists and six penalty minutes, while registering a +2 rating in his stint with the Monarchs. Zion ranks third on the Royals in scoring with six goals and 22 points. Fifteen of his points have come on the power play. Of his six goals, three came in the regular season opener on October 17 in a 6-1 win against Trenton. Zion was named as a starter for the 12th Annual ECHL All-Star Game to be held in Peoria, Illinois next week January 20-21.
The Reading Royals take the ice at home on Friday, January 16 against the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,000 fans through the gate receive a free Royals cap courtesy of All Star Distributing. WWE Professional wrestler, Shawn Michaels will be in attendance signing autographs before the game from 5-7 p.m. Reading battles rival Trenton on Saturday, January 17 at 7:05 p.m.. Immix Wireless is handing out foam fingers to the first 2,000 fans in attendance and the Coors Light Nascar will be on display as well.
