Royals Hold off Nailers

Reading Royals News Release

Wheeling, WV - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (2nd Atlantic Division, 5-5-0-010), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Wheeling Nailers (1st Atlantic Division, 7-4-0-014), 2-1, at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. Reading jumped out early with back-to-back power play goals and held off the Nailers attack from that point forward thanks in large part to spectacular goaltending from Ben Scrivens. The win for Reading capped the team's season long six-game road trip, during which the team went 4-2-0-0. Scrivens (win, 3-3-0-0, 40/41) rejected repeated point blank opportunities for Wheeling all game long. Patrick Killeen (loss, 6-1-0-0; 23/25) was good, as well, despite suffering his first loss of the year. All of the game's goals were scored on the power play (Reading: 2-7; and Wheeling 1-7).

Reading benefitted from an long sequence of five-on-three power play awarded early in the first period. The Royals capitalized on the front end of the sequence when Rob Kwiet dished to Ryan Cruthers, who in turn found Olivier Labelle out front for his seventh of the year, 3:39 into the game. The Royals then converted on the back-end of the five on three 1:11 later on a similar play-this one from Andrew Sarauer, who passed to Matt Caruana in the left corner; and Caruana then fed to the top of the crease, where Chris Blight punched through his first of the year. From that point forward, the Nailers came in waves, and Reading's defense bent a bit at times, but did not break until early in the third, when Nick Peterson, who had been flat out stoned on several previous occasions by Scrivens, was able to chip a loose puck over a sprawled Scrivens for a power play goal at the 3:10 mark of the third. The Nailers turned up the heat even few more degrees at that point, but Scrivens played calm, cool and collected on his way to collecting his second consecutive win.

The Royals return home on Saturday night (November 13 @ 7:05 pm) when the team will face the South Carolina Stingrays at the Sovereign Center. The first 2500 fans that night will receive a Tenth Anniversary Commemorative T-Shirt courtesy of Metro Bank. There will be no pre-game warm-up show for the Royals' broadcast on Saturday due to Penn State Football; but the Royals' broadcast will start on the Royals Broadcast Network (WRAW 1340 am in Reading, www.1340wraw.com) at 7:00 pm.
