Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

AUGUST 4, 2006, 7:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (44-69) vs. Portland Beavers (55-57)

HOME: 26-28 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 18-41 (37-35 in '05) vs. Portland: 0-2 (3-1 in '05)

TONIGHT: The Royals host the Portland Beavers in a 7:05 p.m. game at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Beavers lead the series 2-0. It's Fireworks Friday and the 2nd Boy Scout Sleepover, presented by US 93.3 and KETV. Air time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.

LAST NIGHT: Sweeney was the star. Unfortunately for Royals fans, it was Brian, not Mike. The Portland starter combined with 3 relievers on a 4-hitter as the Royals were blanked 5-0. Sweeney (1-0), making his 2nd start and 4th appearance for the Beavers since being sent down by San Diego, allowed just 2 singles and no walks in 6.0 innings, striking out 4 batters. Justin Leone had 2 hits, including his 18th home run, and Kennard Jones was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Royals starter Seth Etherton (1-2) took the loss, giving up 3 runs to his former club over 4.2 frames.

ROYALS REPORT: Mike Sweeney was 0-for-3 with a walk last night. In his 2 rehab assignment games with Omaha, the KC Royals DH is 1-for-7 and has scored a run. *** KC has purchased the contract of veteran right-hander Pat Mahomes from the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. Mahomes is expected to join Omaha today and jump right into the action, making the start tonight. Catcher Paul Phillips will also rejoin Omaha today, after being optioned down by KC. Phillips, who was recalled on July 8, batted .273 (6-22) with 1 RBI in 8 games for the parent club. *** The Royals are 4-10 in shutouts this season. The 10 losses are the most since Omaha was 7-11 in shutout games in 2004. Last year's club went 8-3 in whitewashings. *** The Royals have been outscored 103-64 over their past 12 games, losing 8 of them. Omaha's starters have been involved in each decision over that stretch, posting an 8.56 ERA (59 ER in 62.0 IP). *** Jeff Keppinger has hit in 11 straight games. He's batting .478 (22-46) with 2 homers, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored during the streak, which is tied for the 4th longest by an Omaha batter this season. *** Mike Coolbaugh has put together a 12-game hit string. During the streak, which is the 3rd best for a Royal this year, he's hitting .298 (17-57) with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. *** Kerry Robinson was 0-for-3 last night, ending his personal-best hitting streak at 10 games. Over the last 11 contests, he's still batting .476 (20-42) with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored. "K-Rob" has batted in the #9 spot for 10 of those games. *** Jose Diaz made his Omaha debut last night, finishing the game with 2.0 innings of relief. The hard-throwing right-hander pitched a perfect 8th inning, before allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and a pair of walks in the 9th. Diaz was acquired by KC from the Rangers in exchange for Matt Stairs. *** Andrew Sisco made his 2nd relief appearance since being sent down by KC - and his 1st ever at Rosenblatt Stadium last night. The 6'-10" lefty fired 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit and a walk, while striking out 2. *** Fernando Cortez, batting leadoff for the 10th straight game last night, went 0-for-4 to halt a 4-game streak. Over his past 13 tilts, he's hitting .309 (17-55) and has scored 8 runs. *** Chad Allen is 6-for-his-last-35 (.171), dropping his average 14 points to .315 and falling out of the PCL Top 10 in batting. *** Since joining the PCL in 2001, Portland is 12-2 at Rosenblatt Stadium, winning 6 in a row here. Overall, Portland is 18-12 vs. Omaha all-time.

STARTERS: RH Dewon Brazelton (3-3, 2.82) vs. RH Pat Mahomes (0-0, 0.00)

Mahomes, who had his contract purchased yesterday by KC from the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, makes his 1st start for Omaha.
