Portland Beavers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Jack Cust became just the second Portland batter to hit three home runs in a game since the team returned to the Pacific Coast League in 2001, and the Beavers overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the Omaha Royals 7-5 Friday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Cust, who last week matched the PCL record for walks in a game with five, hit solo home runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings, with his third blast breaking a 4-4 tie. Cust became the first Beaver to tally three homers in a game since Adams Riggs accomplished the feat on July 14, 2001.
Manny Alexander was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Luke Carlin singled, doubled and walked three times for the Beavers, who have won their last seven games at Rosenblatt Stadium; they last lost in Omaha on April 23, 2002.
The Beavers (56-57) have won eight of their last 12 games and are within a game of .500 for the first time since June 22.
Dewon Brazelton (4-3), the reigning PCL Pitcher of the Week, won his fourth straight decision with 6 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander gave up eight hits and four runs, but only one of those runs was earned, as an error in the fifth inning led to three unearned runs.
Scott Cassidy earned his sixth save by retiring the side in order in the ninth.
Bobby Keppel (4-5) took the loss, allowing three runs (2 earned) in relief.
The Beavers fell behind 4-1 after the Royals (44-70) tied the game in the second inning and took the lead with a three-run fifth. Alejandro Prieto reached on an error by third baseman Paul McAnulty to start the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly. Mike Sweeney, with Omaha on a major league rehab assignment, later belted a two-run homer.
Sweeney was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs scored.
Cust's second home run started a game-tying, three-run rally in the sixth. Alexander added a two-run single to tie the game at 4-4.
After Cust gave Portland a 5-4 lead in the seventh with his third blast of the night, Alexander's single to right led to two insurance runs.
The Beavers round out their series with the Royals Saturday night at 4:05 p.m. (PDT). Portland is looking for its first road sweep since the 2004 season.
