Lee returns to win column; RedHawks win
August 4, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Oklahoma RedHawks recorded their second straight 2-0 win over the Las Vegas 51s Friday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
The RedHawks beat the 51s 2-0 Thursday in a complete game by R.A. Dickey. Friday, it was RedHawk starter Derek Lee's turn to tame the 51s.
Lee went 7.1 innings and gave up eight hits, walked three and struck out five. It was his first win since June 21 against New Orleans. He had been 0-7 in his last eight appearances.
The only extra-base hit off Lee came by the final batter he faced. Wilson Valdez doubled to put runners at second and third with one out in the eighth with the RedHawks ahead, 2-0. However, relief pitcher Nick Masset retired the first two batters he faced to keep the RedHawks on top.
Erasmo Ramirez then stranded the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth to preserve the shutout and record his fourth save of the season. A fielder's choice and a double play kept the 51s off the board in the ninth.
The RedHawks were held to their lowest hit total of the season by three Las Vegas pitchers. The RedHawks managed two hits, including an RBI triple by Jamie Burke in the first inning. Both RedHawk runs came in the first.
Las Vegas starter Joel Hanrahan went seven innings and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
It was the first time the RedHawks had two straight shutout wins since Aug. 15 and 16, 2003 when they beat Fresno 9-0 and 1-0.
The RedHawks go for a four-game sweep of the 51s at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. John Rheinecker is scheduled to start for Oklahoma and Hong-Chih Kuo for Las Vegas.
