Tucson Sidewinders News Release
New Orleans - Bill Murphy tossed five solid innings and Alberto Callaspo went 5-5 with a home run and two runs scored as the Sidewinders beat the New Orleans Zephyrs 5-3 on Friday night at Zephyr Field. The win moves Tucson to 72-40 on the season.
Callaspo homered leading off in the fifth inning and Chris Young hit the next pitch over the wall in center-field for his 20th home run of the season to give the Sidewinders an early 5-0 lead. Tucson had scored three times in the top of the first as Robby Hammock doubled home a pair and Brian Barden's RBI groundout scored another.
On the mound, Murphy answered the call. Stepping in for Dustin Nippert, Murphy went five innings and gave up two runs on just three hits. He struck out six and walked two to improve his record to 5-4.
Nippert was called up by the Diamondbacks and is scheduled to start tomorrow at Chase Field against the Houston Astros.
Jon Castellanos gave up one run in his two inning Triple-A debut and Mike Schultz worked the final two frames for his third save of the season.
Former Sidewinder Nelson Figueroa was tagged with the loss. Figueroa (2-3) went six innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Callaspo's five hit game was his second of the season and his team leading 45th multi-hit game. Young finished 2-4.
The Sidewinders and Zephyrs will wrap up their four game series on Saturday night at Zephyr Field. Right-hander Adam Bass (6-1 4.89) will start for Tucson against right-hander Jason Bergmann (8-1 2.98) for New Orleans. First pitch is at 4:00 Tucson time.
