HOME: 15-14 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 7-17 (37-35 in '05) vs. New Orleans: 2-0 (11-5 in '05)
TODAY: The Royals host the New Orleans Zephyrs in a 12:05 p.m. game at Rosenblatt Stadium. Omaha leads the series 2-0 and is 4-3 on the homestand. ½-price burgers are featured, courtesy of Omaha Steaks! And it's Seniors Day: all fans 60-and-over get $2 off the price of any ticket, presented by The City Weekly. Air-time is 11:45 a.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Leading 6-1 entering the 9th, the Royals hung on for a 6-4 victory. David Elder (1-0) fired 5.0 scoreless innings in his 2nd consecutive start to get the win. Ryan Baerlocher lost the shutout in the 7th when Brandon Larson led off with his 8th home run, cutting the Royals lead to 3-1. That was the only run off Baerlocher in 3.0 innings. However, Shane Loux was tagged for 3 runs on 5 hits in the 9th, and the Zephyrs had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs when Loux retired Ryan Church on a sharp grounder to short. Kerry Robinson went 3-for-5 with an RBI, 2 runs scored and a steal. Ricky Bell knocked in 2 runs with a sacrifice fly and a single. Pedro Astacio (0-1) was the loser, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits over 4.0 frames in his rehab assignment start.
ROYALS REPORT: Elder has not given up a run in 15.1 innings over his last 4 appearances (2 starts). The scoreless streak has dropped his ERA from 7.11 to 3.21. In his 11 relief outings with Omaha last season, Elder surrendered just 2 unearned over 16.0 innings, posting a 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA. *** The Royals 3-game winning streak matches their longest of the season, which was accomplished twice in the club's 1st 13 games when Omaha was 9-4. The current streak also matches the Royals longest home win string of the campaign. *** The Royals finished May with a 10-21 record for the month, after going 12-10 in April. However, the club has recently seen the return of Robinson and Justin Huber from KC. Aaron Guiel is due back in Omaha today after being optioned back a couple days ago. And Chad Allen who's riding a 10-game hit streak (.463, 19-41) is due back soon from his hamstring injury. *** Mark Teahen has hit in 14 of his last 15 games, batting at a torrid .510 (26-51) pace, with 2 homers and 14 RBI. *** Ruben Gotay was 0-for-4 last night, snapping his 9-game hitting streak. He's still hitting .400 (16-40) over his last 10 tilts, with 2 home runs and 6 RBI. *** Robinson's 3-hit game last night was his 3rd of the season; he also has two 4-hit contests. In 8 games since coming back from KC, he has scored 7 runs and is 3-for-3 in steal attempts. *** Huber has hit in 4 straight games, matching his longest streak of the year. He has also hit in 8 of the last 9 games, at a .355 (11-31) clip with 3 doubles, 2 triples, a home run and 3 RBI. *** Loux allowed just 1 earned run over 8.0 innings for a 1.13 ERA in his 1st 3 relief appearances of the season. However, he has surrendered 11 earned runs over 5.0 innings for a 19.80 ERA and is 0-2 in his last 3 outings.
STARTERS: RH Anastacio Martinez (1-2, 5.23) vs. RH Kyle Snyder (0-3, 3.81)
Snyder makes his 9th start (10th appearance) of the season. The 28-year old right-hander's last start was last Saturday in game 1 of a doubleheader vs. Memphis. Snyder took a 5-3 lead into the 7th, but wound up with a no-decision as the Redbirds scored 2 unearned runs that inning and went on to win 6-5 in 8 innings (6.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R-3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3 WP). In 54.1 innings this year, Snyder has walked only 7 batters, striking out 40. In 2005, Snyder opened the season with Omaha, but had 3 stints with KC. He went 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) for Omaha and was 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 13 games (3 starts) for KC. He compiled a 2.66 ERA in his 10 relief appearances in the big leagues, but lost all 3 of his starts and had a 14.59 ERA. Snyder missed the entire 2004 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. He also missed all of the 2001 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Snyder was KC's 1st round pick (7th overall) in the 1999 draft out of the University of North Carolina.
PROBABLES FOR REMAINDER OF SERIES:
Fri., 7:05: RH Nelson Figueroa (2-0, 5.73) vs. RH Brian Boehringer (0-0, 1.35)
