Express break free from streak of one-run losses
June 1, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Round Rock put up eight runs in the third inning against Memphis (St. Louis Cardinals) on Thursday, putting an exclamation point on what had been a franchise record five consecutive one-run losses spanning back to May 27 with a 10-4 win at The Dell Diamond.
Mike Rodriguez, Joe McEwing, Humberto Quintero and Brian Gordon all had multi-hit games. McEwing drove in a season-high five runs, more than he had in his last nine games combined.
The Express rally began quietly in the third inning on a Brooks Conrad single and ended loudly eight batters later when Joe McEwing send a grand slam shot over the left field wall to lift Round Rock ahead 9-2.
After Conrad led off with a line shot into right field, Luke Scott drew his second walk of the night and Royce Huffman drove them both in with his 14th double to give Round Rock a 3-2 edge.
Memphis starter Will Cunnane - a reliever for Round Rock last year - gave up three more hits, including a Cody Ransom RBI-double, before turning the ball over to Alan Benes.
Benes got Ezequiel Astacio to ground out before intentionally walking Mike Rodriguez to load the bases with one out.
That brought up McEwing, who hadn't had an at-bat with the bases loaded all season. The 33-year-old drove a 1-1 off-speed delivery from Benes out of the ballpark, helping pave the way for Round Rock's first win in six games.
The Express takes on Memphis for the fourth and final game of the series Friday at 7:05 p.m. at The Dell Diamond. The Omaha Royals (Kansas City Royals) head to Round Rock for a four-game set starting Saturday.
