Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Fresno - Russ Ortiz pitched 6 2/3 innings of one run baseball and Chris Young homered and drove in three to lead the Sidewinders to an 8-1 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Wednesday night. The victory gives Tucson their 30th win of the season and moves them back into first place in the Pacific Southern division, ½ game ahead of Las Vegas.
Ortiz (1-0) gave up six hits and struck out four in his fourth rehab start for the Sidewinders. He walked just two and escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning.
Terry Mulholland pitched the final 2 1/3 innings in his third rehab appearance and did not allow a hit or a run. He walked one and struck out three.
Young put the Sidewinders on the board with his seventh home run of the season in the top of the first inning against Fresno starter James Garcia. He added an RBI double in the seventh and walked with the bases loaded in the eighth. He finished 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base and has now hit in five consecutive games.
Garcia (4-2) took the loss, allowing eight hits and five runs in his six innings of work.
After Fresno tied the game at one on Justin Knoedler's RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, Tucson scored three times in the fourth. Kenny Perez's RBI single plated two and Robby Hammock's RBI single scored Perez to give the Sidewinders a 4-1 lead.
Perez finished 2-4 with two RBI and two runs. Hammock went 1-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine.
Tucson made it a 6-1 game in the seventh. Young's double scored Alberto Callaspo and Scott Hairston brought home Young with a base hit to left. Hairston's hit was his second of the night and extended his hitting streak to eight.
The Sidewinders scored their final two runs in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. An error, a hit batsmen and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Young's walk scored one run and a wild pitch by Merkin Valdez brought home another. Carlos Quentin went 0-5 with two strikeouts and saw his 15 game hitting streak come to an end.
The Sidewinders and Grizzlies play game three of their series on Thursday night at Grizzlies Stadium. Left-hander Bill Murphy (1-3 5.54) makes the start for Tucson against southpaw Michael Tejera (3-1 2.59) for Fresno. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
