Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

MAY 18, 2006, 9:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (17-21) @ Sacramento (17-22)

HOME: 11-11 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 6-10 (37-35 in '05) vs. Sacramento: 0-0 (2-2 in '05)

TONIGHT: The Royals open an 8-game road trip with the 1st of a 4-game series at Sacramento. Omaha is coming off a 3-5 homestand. It's a 9:05 p.m. 1st pitch for the Royals and River Cats from Raley Field. Air-time is 8:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.

LAST GAME: Omar Quintanilla belted a solo homer with 2 outs in the top of the 11th and Colorado Springs completed a 6-2 road trip with a 6-5 win at Rosenblatt Stadium on Tuesday. The Sky Sox shortstop was 3-for-4 on the day, with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. His game-deciding home run came off Steve Andrade (0-1), who allowed 3 hits in his 2.0 innings of work and took the loss. Nate Field (2-2) picked up the win over his former club, after firing 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up just 1 hit and racking up 4 strikeouts. Zach McClellan surrendered a single and a walk in the bottom of the 11th, but earned his 1st save after getting Paul Phillips on a pop out to end the game, leaving Royals at 1st and 2nd base.

ROYALS REPORT: Quintanilla went 10-for-18 (.556) in the 4-game series, smacking 4 doubles and a home run. He had 3 RBI and scored 7 runs for the Sky Sox. *** Starter Brian Bass has been sent to Wichita. The 24-year old right-hander was 1-5 with a 7.59 ERA in 7 starts for Omaha. He allowed 49 hits in 32.0 innings, with more walks (14) than strikeouts (11). Bass had lost each of his last 3 starts and gave up 16 earned runs in 7.0 innings (20.57 ERA) over his last 2 outings. *** Outfielder Shane Costa began a rehab assignment last night with Wichita for a strained left hamstring. He went 2-for-4 and knocked in a run in the Wranglers' 7-3 win vs. Tulsa. If all goes well for Costa in tonight's game vs. Tulsa, KC reportedly could activate him as early as tomorrow. That move could signal a return of seldom-used Justin Huber to Omaha from the parent club. *** Chip Ambres had 4 hits Tuesday - his season high and equaling the season-high for an Omaha batter (7th time). The big day jumped his batting average 25 points to .208. *** The Royals banged out 16 hits on Tuesday, with 11 of those coming in the first 4.2 innings off Springs starter Jon Asahina, which was a season high hit total allowed by an opposing hurler. *** Mark Teahen was 3-for-5 with a triple on Tuesday. After going 2-for-23 (.087) in his 1st 7 games with Omaha, Teahen is 4-for-7 with an RBI and 3 runs scored in his last 2 games. *** Chad Allen also went 3-for-5 on Tuesday, hiking his batting average at Rosenblatt to .349 in 22 games. He's hitting .238 in 15 contests on the road. *** The Royals won each of the 1st 5 games they played this season that were decided in the last at-bat. Omaha is 1-3 in the past 4 games settled in the final at-bat.

STARTERS: RH Adam Bernero (1-1, 3.38) vs. LH Dan Meyer (3-2, 4.58)

Bernero makes his 5th consecutive start, after opening the season in Omaha's bullpen and making 4 relief appearances. The 29-year old right-hander's last start was last Friday vs. Salt Lake. He was not involved in the decision, as the Royals needed 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win 4-2 (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K). In 2005, Bernero opened the season with Atlanta. In 36 relief outings for the Braves, he was 4-3 with a 6.51 ERA. He went 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his 1st 20 games, but was 1-3 and had an 11.57 ERA in his last 16 outings. He was optioned to Richmond on July 14 and went 5-5 with a 3.40 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) in Triple-A. Prior to this season, 84 of his 87 minor league appearances came as a starter, with Bernero compiling a 30-30 record and 3.29 ERA. Bernero was signed by KC as a minor league free agent on November 21, 2005. He was originally signed by Detroit as a non-drafted free agent on May 21, 1999 out of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Georgia.
