Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Portland right fielder Terrmel Sledge crushed two home runs as the Beavers cruised to an 8-3 over Memphis in the series opener at AutoZone Park on Thursday.

Portland jumped out to and early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning. Germantown High School product Ben Johnson singled and scored on a Justin Leone single to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Sledge added his first homer of the night, a solo shot to push the lead to 2-0.

Memphis answered with a run in the bottom of the second and another in the fourth to knot the game at 2-2. However, the fifth inning proved costly for Memphis as Portland plated three runs on three hits and benefited from two costly Redbirds' errors.

Skip Schumaker led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He later scored on a Timo Perez ground-out to pull the Redbirds closer at 5-3, but Memphis would not score again.

The Redbirds out-hit the Beavers 12-10 as Schumaker, Brian Daubach, Michel Hernandez, Chris Duncan and Travis Hanson all tallied two-hit games but Memphis could not manage the timely hits it needed and left nine runners on base for the game.

Sledge added a three run cushion to the Portland lead with a towering three-run blast to right field off reliever Alan Benes in the top of the ninth inning to reach the final margin, 8-3.

Eric Junge (4-3) pitched five innings to earn the victory for the Beavers. John Webb (2-4) suffered the loss for Memphis after surrendering five runs, four earned, on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Memphis will look to even the series tomorrow night as newcomer Will Cunnane (0-0, 7.20)will make his third start for the Redbirds. Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. CST.
