Albuquerque starter Yusmeiro Petit (1-0) worked 6.0 innings and limited the Royals to 1 run, which scored on Aaron Guiel's 2nd home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1 in the 4th.
ROYALS REPORT: After winning their first 3 games this season, the Royals have lost 3 of 4. Omaha has been held to just 4 hits in losing the last 2 games to Albuquerque, scoring just once in each contest. On the season, the Royals have a .204 team batting average and have only scored 20 runs in their first 7 games. The starting pitchers for Nashville and Albuquerque have combined to post a 1.18 ERA on this homestand, holding the Royals to 5 earned runs on 20 hits over 38.0 innings. *** Chad Allen extended his season-opening hit string to seven games last night, going 1-for-4. Omaha's designated hitter is leading the club with a .370 (10-27) batting average. *** After committing only 3 errors in their first 5 games, the Royals have committed 2 errors in each of the past 2 games. *** Albuquerque has hit a pair of home runs in each of the last 2 games here at Rosenblatt Stadiium, after failing to connect for a long ball in the Isotopes first 5 contests. *** Keppel saw his ERA rise from 5.06 to 6.55 after being charged with 5 earned runs in 5.2 innings last night.
STARTERS: RH Nate Bump (0-1, 1.80) vs. LH J.P. Howell (1-0, 0.00) Howell makes his 2nd start of the season. The 22-year old lefty silenced the Nashville Sounds for 6.0 innings in game 1 of last Saturday's doubleheader, getting the win in a 2-0 victory (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K). In 2005, Howell raced through 3 levels of the minors and got his first taste of the big leagues in just his 2nd professional season. He began the season with Class-A High Desert, making eight starts before jumping to Double-A Wichita - where he made just three starts before being promoted to Omaha. In 7 starts at Triple-A, Howell went 3-1 and posted a 4.06 ERA. In his 18 minor league starts combined, he was 8-2 with a 2.83 ERA. Howell had his contract purchased by KC on June 11 and wound up making 15 starts for KC, going 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA. Howell, who turns 23 this month, enjoyed the 2nd-quickest rise through the Royals organization in club history, as only Bo Jackson had a quicker trip to the Majors. Howell was KC's sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds (31st overall) in the 2004 draft out of the University of Texas. In 2004 with Texas, he was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and a finalist for the Roger Clemens Award, given annually to the top college pitcher.
