Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Justin Hampson allowed one hit over six scoreless innings in his first start of the season, and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox limited Portland to three hits total in a 3-1 victory over the Beavers Thursday night at PGE Park.
Hampson, making his first start since coming off the disabled list on Wednesday, gave up a fourth-inning single while issuing three walks and striking out four. Nate Field worked the ninth inning for his first save of the year.
Jeff Baker had three hits to lead the Sky Sox (3-5), who took three of four from the Beavers.
Justin Leone scored the lone Portland run and logged all three hits; he is now batting .517 this season on the strength of an eight-game hitting streak to start the season.
The Sky Sox scored an unearned run in the fifth and got a solo home run from Sean Barker in the seventh to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers (4-4) got on the board in the seventh when David Matranga grounded out with the bases loaded, allowing Leone, who singled to start the rally, to score from third.
Omar Quintanilla doubled to lead off the eighth and scored on Baker's RBI single.
Portland's Mario Ramos (0-1) turned in a solid effort in his second start for the Beavers, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out six over 5.0 innings.
The Beavers open a four-game series at Salt Lake Friday night at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
HALL-OF-FAME INDUCTEE: Beavers great Eddie Basinksi was one of seven members inducted into the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame on Thursday. Known as "The Fiddler," Basinski collected 1,426 hits and 579 RBIs during his career in the PCL and played in Portland from 1947-1957. Tommy Lasorda and Dom DiMaggio were also included in this year's class.
NOTES: Beavers center fielder Freddy Guzman threw out Baker at home plate to end the top of the second ... Ramos' plate appearance in the bottom of the third was just the second of his seven-year playing career. Previous, he had one at-bat with the Texas Rangers in 2003 ... a light drizzle fell during most of the game ... Barker's home run came off Aquilino Lopez, who was allowed five home runs in 5.1 innings pitched this season.
