Isotopes end midwest swing with 11-5 loss to Omaha

One day removed from the Albuquerque Isotopes (3-5) scoring in double-digits, it was the Omaha Royals' (5-3) turn as they defeated the Isotopes 11-5 Thursday afternoon at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The O-Royals wasted little time getting to Albuquerque starter Nate Bump, putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the second. First baseman Justin Huber started the scoring with a two-run homer to left field before RBI singles by Andres Blanco and Kerry Robinson gave the home team a 4-0 cushion.

Omaha would tally twice more in the third when former Isotope Chad Allen led off the frame with a solo home run that was followed by an RBI single by Rick Bell that put the Royals up 6-0.

After a fourth-inning wild pitch by Albuquerque reliever Chris George allowed Robinson to score Omaha's seventh run of the day, the ‘Topes got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fifth. Scott Seabol drove in Jason Stokes with a two-out single to put the Isotopes on the board before catcher Tom Wilson scored two with a double to left, his first hit of the 2006 season.

The Royals would get the three runs right back, however, in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-RBI single by Blanco and a run-scoring double by Robinson to put Omaha up 10-3.

Albuquerque mounted one last comeback in the top of eighth when Mike Colangelo belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, that made the score 10-5 Royals, but Omaha would counter with one more in the bottom of the eighth to increase the margin of victory to 11-5.

Bump (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing a season-high six earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings-pitched, while Royals lefty J.P. Howell (2-0) took the win.

With four games in Des Moines, Iowa, and four more in Omaha in the books, the ‘Topes will return for their home debut tomorrow at Isotopes Park against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Right-hander Nic Ungs (0-1) will get the ball for Albuquerque against Z's left-hander Billy Traber (0-0).

Albuquerque's home opener tomorrow will also feature a rare tribute to that night's opponent, the New Orleans Zephyrs, who have brought baseball back to the Big Easy. The special night will also include a Sports Bag giveaway to the first 3,000 fans courtesy of Sandia Resort and Casino while the following night, April 15, the Opening Weekend celebration continues with the first fireworks show of the 2006 season.
