Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
TONIGHT: The Royals host Colorado Springs in game 2 of a 4-game series. Omaha is 2-3 on the home stand, after taking the series opener last night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. with the pre-game show on the air at 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: Byron Gettis went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and scored twice, helping the Royals down the Sky Sox 8-3. Alberto Castillo had 3 hits, including an RBI double and Alexis Gomez knocked in a pair of runs and scored once as Omaha snapped a 3-game losing streak. Royals starter Brad Voyles (2-1) got the win, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 5.2 innings, before coming out with tightness in his right elbow. Sox starter Travis Driskill (1-2) came in with a 1.74 ERA, but saw it jump to 6.08 after surrendering 7 runs in 3.0 innings, taking the loss.
ROYALS REPORT: Voyles notched 7 strikeouts Thursday night for a 2nd consecutive start, a season high for an Omaha pitcher. The 27-year old right-hander ranks 2nd in the PCL with 26 whiffs. He walked 4 batters and has issued a league-leading 17 walks in 27.0 innings. *** Jed Hansen extended his hitting streak to 5 games Thursday with a pinch-hit triple. Hansen is 8-for-16 (.500) with 5 RBI during the streak, after going 0-for-12 in his 1st 4 games this season. *** Rick Short, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Thursday, is hitting .308 (8-26) over his last 7 contests. The Omaha third baseman has 9 RBI in that stretch, after hitting .184 with no RBI over his 1st 10 tilts. *** Adrian Brown has only hit .214 (6-28) over his last 8 games, but has coaxed 9 walks and scored 6 runs during that span. *** Jarrod Patterson is hitting .378 (14-37) over his last 10 games, with 7 doubles, 10 RBI and 9 runs scored. *** Calvin Pickering struck out 3 more times Thursday, giving the big first baseman 14 K's in his last 26 at-bats. He's just 3-for-26 (.115) over his last 8 games. *** Wilton Guerrero has gone 0-for-13 over his past 3 contests. That follows his season-high, 7-game hitting streak when the Royals second baseman hit at a .433 (13-30) clip. *** Catcher Paul Phillips owns a 4-game streak, going 5-for-12 with 3 RBI and 3 runs. *** Shortstop Gookie Dawkins is hitting only .167 (3-18) over his last 6 starts, but has still managed to knock in 4 runs and score 4 more during that stretch. *** Jaime Cerda, who tossed 2.0 scoreless innings Thursday, has not allowed a run in 4.0 frames over his last 3 appearances for Omaha. *** Since joining the Pacific Coast League in 1998, Omaha has gone 65-31 (.677) vs. Colorado Springs, its best record vs. any opponent.
STARTERS: RH Denny Stark (0-1, 31.50) vs. RH Kris Wilson (2-1, 5.48) Wilson makes his 5th start of the season. The 27-year old right-hander won his 2nd straight outing last Sunday vs. Albuquerque, helping Omaha to a 6-2 triumph (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K). He did not allow a home run, after surrendering 5 in 16.0 innings over his 1st 3 starts. In 2003, Wilson went 6-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 29 games (4 starts) for KC and was 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA in 5 relief outings for Omaha. That included a 10.12 ERA (6 ER in 5.1 IP) and 2 losses in as many appearances vs. Colorado Springs.
