OMAHA â The Colorado Springs Sky Sox smacked four home runs â three off Omaha starter Kris Wilson â in a 9-4 win over the Royals Friday night before 3,250 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Wilson (2-2) retired the visitors in order in each of the first two innings, before yielding a pair of two-run homers in the top of the third. Colorado Springs center fielder Choo Freeman broke a scoreless tie with the first long ball. Freeman would add an RBI single and run-scoring double, winding up 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Erick Almonte also belted a two-run shot in the third, despite Wilson being ahead in the count one-ball-and-two-strikes. Wilson was ahead of Sox shortstop Clint Barmes 0-and-2 with two outs in the fourth, when he drilled a two-run homer to left, capping a three-run inning that put the Springs in control 7-1.
Wilson wound up allowing seven runs on nine hits over five frames. The 27-year old right-hander moved into the Pacific Coast League lead in home runs allowed, with eight surrendered over his first 28 innings this season.
After Jimmy Serrano pitched two scoreless innings for Omaha, D.J. Carrasco was greeted in the eighth by Andy Tracy's fourth home run of the season â coming on a 1-2 count â to make it 8-1. Freeman's RBI double plated an unearned run for the final Sox tally.
In the bottom of the eighth, Royals first baseman Calvin Pickering belted a two-run homer to make it 9-3. It was Pickering's first round-tripper since April 18th, giving him a league-leading 12 home runs and 29 RBI as the first month of the season comes to a close.
The Royals scored a run in the ninth on Adrian Brown's sacrifice fly, but fell to 9-13 on the season and 5-9 at home. Colorado Springs improved to 11-9 overall and 9-5 on the road.
