Sacramento gains ground on Tucson with 10-4 win

The Sacramento RiverCats picked up a game on the Sidewinders Thursday night with a 10-4 victory. Sacramento RHP Mike Wood (3-2) picked up the win pitching 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 5. Starting pitcher Jon Cannon was dealt his first loss of the season for Tucson, lasting only 3.1 innings, while giving up 5 runs on 4 hits.

Sacramento received big offensive nights from 3B Adam Morrissey and CF Steve Stanley. Morrissey went 3-5 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Stanley belted his first home run of the year, a 2-run shot to deep right field in the top of the 4th. Those runs were just 2 of 7 the RiverCats put on the board in the inning. Stanley finished 2-4.

For Tucson, 2B Scott Hairston hit his 3rd bomb of the year with a 2-run job in the first to deep left. He would later tack on another hit to finish 2-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. SS Jerry Gil found himself in the home run column for the first time this season with a 6th inning solo shot. This coming after he broke out with a double in the 4th. Those were his only 2 hits in 3 at bats. Also for Tucson, Luis Terrero went 4-4.

The win pulled the RiverCats to within 1.5 games of first-place Tucson. Tucson stands at 12-8 and Sacramento improved to 11-10. 3,776 fans attended the contest and the game was complete in 3:13. Tomorrow night's game starts at 6:30 PM and will feature RHP Joe Blanton (1-1, 2.59) for Sacramento facing Tucson's RHP Phil Stockman (1-0, 3.38).
