Royals Edge Nailers in Defensive Battle
November 11, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- After an offensive explosion which saw a combined total of 12 goals on Tuesday, defense was the name of the game on Wednesday night, as the Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals combined for three goals on 45 shots at Santander Arena. With 1:27 left in the second stanza, Robbie Czarnik broke a 1-1 tie, pushing Reading to the 2-1 win on home ice.
Two goals were scored in the opening period, and in similar fashion to Tuesday morning, there was very little time between the tallies. The Royals got on the scoreboard first at the 7:03 mark, as Robbie Czarnik won a face-off to Mike Pereira, whose shot found the back of the net from the left circle. 58 seconds later, Wheeling responded. Brett Stern kicked the puck forward, springing Derek Army and Riley Brace on a 2-on-1 rush. Army skated down the left side of the ice, then feathered a pass through the slot to Brace, who slammed in a one-timer from the right side.
The game remained deadlocked until the final minutes of the second period, when Reading went ahead for the second time. Adam Comrie let a wrist shot go from the blueline, which was redirected into the cage by Robbie Czarnik. Czarnik and Mike Pereira both recorded their second points of the tilt on the goal at 18:33 of the middle frame.
After accumulating just four shots on goal in period two, the Nailers attempted to turn things around in the third, outshooting Reading, 10-4. Unfortunately, none of the ten hit paydirt, as Royals hung on for the 2-1 win.
Martin Ouellette picked up the win for Reading, making 20 saves on 21 shots. Brian Foster suffered the tough luck loss for Wheeling, as he turned in a solid effort with 22 stops on 24 shots.
The Nailers will return to WesBanco Arena for three games this weekend. Friday is a 7:35 re-match against Reading, which will also be a Flat Screen Friday, presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday, fans will be able to meet former West Virginia Mountaineers Pat White and Steve Slaton on WVU College Football Night at 7:35 against the Evansville IceMen. Wheeling and Evansville will meet again on Sunday at 4:05, with a post game skate with the team (even numbered players) and McDonald's $5 kids tickets.
Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
