Previewing Ft. Wayne: The Komets currently sit atop the Midwest Division with a 6-3-0-0 record, and are winners of two of their last three games. They are coming off of a 5-2 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Sunday afternoon. They are in scoring by forward Shawn Szydlowski, who has accounted for three goals and eight assists. Right behind him is the reigning ECHL Defenseman of the Week, Jordan Southorn, with five goals and four assists.
Inside the Series: This is the second of 10 meetings this season between the Cyclones and Komets, with Cincinnati taking the first game, 5-1, back on October 31. Cincinnati was 1-1-1-4 last season against the Komets, and these two teams have met a total of 25 times, with Cincinnati holding a 10-7-3-5 all-time in the series.
Next Game Preview: The Cyclones welcome in the Quad City Mallards on Friday, in the first of 11 meetings on the season. Cincinnati and Quad City met twice last season, with Cincinnati taking both match-ups.
That Escalated Quickly: In the Cyclones' 7-5 loss to the Wheeling Nailers on Tuesday, Cincinnati allowed five goals in 4:16; marking the fastest five goals allowed in team history. The previous time was 9:39 back in 2008, also against Wheeling.
The Puck Stops Here: Goaltender Brad Thiessen is amongst the ECHL's goaltending leaders through his first six starts of the season, posting a 4-1-0-1 record, along with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. He earned his fourth win of the season in Friday night's win over Adirondack, and has allowed only one goal in four of his six starts.
O From the D: Cincinnati's defensive corps have been finding the scoresheet early in the season. Cyclones defenseman Cody Carlson notched his first goal of the season in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Wheeling Nailers. Garrett Noonan and Steve Weinstein scored both goals in Saturday's 2-1 win over Evansville. Noonan also had an assist in Friday's 4-2 win over Adirondack. Noonan leads the team in defenseman scoring with three goals and three assists on the young season. Overall, the Cincinnati blueline has been responsible for seven goals and seven assists through the first seven games of the season.
Power Supply: For the third time in two weeks, Cincinnati's power play converted twice in a game, going 2-for-4 in Friday's 4-2 win over Adirondack. The Cyclones also added one in Tuesday's loss to Wheeling. After finishing last season with the 25th power play in the ECHL, Cincinnati is now fifth in the League, converting on 23.3% (7-of-30) of man-advantage opportunities.
Playing Stingy: The Cyclones are currently fifth in the ECHL with 2.25 goals allowed per game. Cincinnati has let in 18 goals this season, which is tied for second lowest in the ECHL, and have only allowed two or more goals on three occasions (10/30- KAL- L, 3-1...11/6- ADK- W, 4-2...11/10- WHL- L, 7-5).
Throwback Night: Friday night's game against the Quad City Mallards is the annual Throwback Night at U.S. Bank Arena. The Cyclones will be throwing back the prices with $10 tickets, and $1 hot dogs, soda, pizza and beers. Saturday is also Teddy Bear Toss Night. Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to throw onto the ice after the Cyclones score their first goal. The stuffed animals will then be donated to the Cincinnati Police Department to distribute to young victims of crimes, accidents and fires in Cincinnati.
