BROCKTON, Massachusetts - The Brockton Rox took advantage of five errors from the Rockland Boulders defense on Wednesday night to propel them to a 13-6 win in Can-Am League action.
Keith Brachold paced the Brockton offense going 2-for-5 with a grand slam and collected seven RBIs in the contest.
The Boulders struck early in the top of the first on an RBI single from Sean Smith that drove home Jermel Lomack who reached based on an error. However, it was six straight runs for Brockton as they held a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the third, Brachold capped the frame off with a grand slam off Boulders' starter Casey Hodges. On a 0-1 count, Brachold drove the second offering deep over the fence for his fourth homerun of the season giving Brockton a 5-1 edge at the time.
Brockton grabbed one more in the bottom of the fourth, but it was Rockland's turn for some unanswered runs as the club scored four to cut the Rox lead. Lomack collected an RBI single in the top of the fifth, scoring Dustin Smith, and then the Boulders plated three in the next frame on two hits to bring the deficit to one at 6-5.
With Brockton leading 7-5 in the top of the seventh, Ryan Mollica scored on an RBI double from Sean Smith, his second RBI of the game, bringing the Boulders back to within one. In the bottom of the frame, the Rox scored two runs aided by a pair of errors committed by Rockland on Jorge Jimenz' single.
The Rox added four in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the club's second straight victory over Rockland.
Hodges is charged with his second loss of the season giving up nine runs on 11 hits over seven innings of work. Julian Sampson nabbed his second win for Brockton throwing six innings and striking out four.
Bobby Blevins (1-0, 3.00 ERA) gets the nod for Rockland tomorrow, as he and the Boulders get set to open up Provident Bank Park.
These two teams will go back at it tomorrow night, as the Boulders and Rox will play the first ever game at Provident Bank Park. The historic first pitch is set for 7:35 p.m., and can be heard live at rocklandboulders.com. For more information call 845-364-0009.
