Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass - June 15, 2011) - On a night filled with a comedy of errors by the Rockland Boulders (5-11), Keith Brachold led the Brockton Rox (12-7) attack with a grand slam and seven total RBIs on the way to a 13-6 thumping at Campanelli Stadium.
It was the Boulders who jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Sean Smith, but that would be the last lead of the game for Rockland.
The Rox lay dormant in the first two frames before exploding for five runs in the third. With one out in the inning, the next four batters reached base, setting the stage for Brachold's monstrous blast that put the Rox on top 5-1.
Three innings later trailing 6-2, the Boulders got back in the game in the sixth, scoring three runs and eventually chasing Rox starter Julian Sampson (2-1) on a walk, two singles, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Sampson lasted a season high six innings in the victory, while giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out four.
After cutting the lead to one, the bottom of the sixth is when things got sloppy defensively for Rockland and then completely fell apart in the seventh and eighth frames. Two errors in the sixth and three more in the seventh, yielded three runs and gave Brockton a 9-6 lead, before Brachold once again busted the game wide open.
Brockton struck for four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, capped off by Brachold's bases loaded, bases clearing double that stretched the lead to seven.
Abandoned by his defense, Casey Hodges (1-2) took the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eleven hits in seven frames of work.
The five team errors for the Boulders is a season high for the worst fielding club in the Can-Am League. Rockland has now committed 31 errors in just 15 games and eight in their past two.
Chris Valencia went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
The Rox now hit the road for a week long trip that begins Thursday on opening night in Rockland at Provident Bank Park. First pitch for the one game mini-series is set for 7:30 p.m. as Mike Smith toes the rubber for a second chance at his third win. The Boulders will throw righty Bobby Blevins as they look to avoid a ninth straight loss.
