Newark Bears News Release

WORCESTER, MA. (June 14, 2011) - Kevin Cooper and three Worcester Tornado relievers scattered five hits en route to a combined shutout, leading the Tornadoes to a 2-0 victory over the Newark Bears Tuesday night.

Cooper pitched five scoreless innings in his first start for Worcester (7-11), allowing four hits, walking three and striking out two to gain his first win of the season after five prior relief appearances. Sean Gregory pitched two scoreless innings, followed by one from Albert Ayala and Rick Asadoorian pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his third save.

The loss dropped the Bears to 12-7 overall. Newark fell 2 1/2 games behind Quebec in the Can-Am League standings.

The Bears' best chance to score came in the very first inning, when the Bears loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Watson led off the game with a single, followed by walks to Tim Raines, Jr. and Daryle Ward. But Cooper managed to get Danny Santiesteban to ground into a double play, ending the threat.

The Bears hurt themselves by grounding into four double plays during the course of the game.

Victor Gonzalez (0-1) was the hard-luck loser in his second start with the Bears. The 22-year-old left-hander from Queens, NY pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run and five hits, striking out five, but walking six. T.J. Hose finished up for the Bears, pitching two innings, allowing one earned run.

Chris Colabello and Abraham Nunez had RBI singles for the Tornadoes.

Paddy Matera continued his fine hitting of late, delivering two hits. Eric McGee had the lone extra base hit for the Bears, a double.

The Bears finish up their road trip Wednesday night with a game against the Tornadoes at 7:05 p.m. and return home to begin a seven-game home stand Friday night with a game against manager Bill Buckner and the Brockton Rox. Game time Friday night is 5:35 p.m.
