Newark Bears News Release
WORCESTER, MA. (June 15, 2011) - Left-hander Alex Smith improved to 3-0 with seven scoreless innings, scattering just four hits, leading the Newark Bears to a 6-1 win over the Worcester Tornadoes Wednesday night to complete a successful road trip.
With the win, the Bears improved to 13-7 overall and 5-2 on the seven-game road trip. Worcester fell to 7-12 overall.
Smith and Worcester starter and loser Nick Serino (0-3) were locked in a scoreless duel through six innings, before the Bears broke through against Serino and the Tornadoes' bullpen for five runs in the top of the seventh.
Kyle LaMotta delivered the first run with an RBI single. Brandon Watson knocked in the second run with a sacrifice fly and Tim Raines, Jr. had the huge hit, a two-run triple, that pushed the lead to 4-0 and gave Raines, Jr. 23 RBI on the season, which leads the Can-Am League.
The Bears didn't stop there. Daryle Ward smacked an RBI double that pushed the lead to 5-0. Eric McGee then added a solo homer in the eighth inning, his third round tripper of the season.
The Tornadoes scored one run against Bears reliever Chris Rollins in the eighth on a solo homer from Chris Colabello, but that was all Worcester could muster against three Newark pitchers, as Mikey Mehlich, the Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week last week, pitched a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
Paddy Matera continued his torrid hitting for the Bears, collecting three hits. Watson had two hits for the winners.
Colabello had three hits for the Tornadoes, the lone Worcester player with more than one hit.
The Bears take a well-deserved day off on Thursday, then return to action at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Friday night, taking on veteran Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner's Brockton Rox at 5:35 p.m. It begins a seven-game home stand for the Bears, with games slated for Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
