Brockton Rox News Release

Worcester, Mass. - Rox 2B Shawn Williams smoked two home runs and went 4-for-5 with five RBI as Brockton exploded for five homers and 21 hits in a 15-11 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes on Monday night at Hanover Insurance Park.

The Rox (11-9 second half, 38-29 overall) broke through first in the first inning scoring three runs including the first of Williams' homers, a two-run shot to deep left-center field. Later in the inning, 3B Phillip Cuadradoadded a two-out RBI double.

Worcester got on the board in the bottom half on 3B Omar Pena's solo shot, his fourth of the year, and third against Brockton. The Tornadoes (11-10, 30-38) tied it in the second on a two-run single by LF Ryan Crespi.

Brockton exploded over the next three innings, scoring three in the third and four apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead, 14-3. Cuadrado swatted a three-run homer in the third, for his tenth of the season.

RF Keith Brachold knocked his 11th, a three-run longball, in the fourth frame. Then in the fifth inning, Williams (three-run) and 1B Melvin Falu(solo) went back-to-back. Falu now has a league-high 17 homers, and is two-shy of tying the single-season mark in Rox history (19 by Palmer Karr in 2009).

Worcester fought back, plating one in the fifth on a double-play grounder by 1B Chris Colabello, and five in the sixth. The sixth inning saw a two-run double from Pena and a run-scoring single from Colabello.

The Rox added an insurance run in the seventh inning before Worcester scored two more in the eighth inning, but that was as close as the Tornadoes got. RHP Jose Aquino (1-2) picked up his first pro win, going 5.2 innings and giving up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts.

RHP John Kelly (8-3) took the loss as he allowed ten runs and 12 hits in just 3.2 innings, as he was thrown out of the ballgame in the fourth inning by home-plate umpire Dave Speranza for throwing at the batter, Cuadrado.

The five homers and 21 hits are both season highs for Brockton and the most in a game all-time against Worcester. The Rox record for hits in a game is 22, set at New Jersey on June 29, 2007.

Williams scored four runs, which is a first for a Rox player this year. Williams had four hits, along with Brachold who went 4-for-6 with three RBI. CF Chris Valencia, Falu, Cuadrado and C Chris Grossman also had multi-hit games. Everyone in the Rox lineup had a hit including Derek Kinzler, who was a late game defensive substitution.

Game two of this series will be Tuesday night in Worcester at 7:05 p.m. RHP Wayne Lundgren (6-4) takes the mound for the Rox against Worcester RHP Matt Giusti (2-6).
