New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - In a back-and-forth contest, the New Jersey Jackals plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to an 8-5 win over the first-place Quebec Capitales on a hot and humid Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
After Quebec scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, the Jackals countered and broke the game open in the home half of the frame. With two runs already in and the bases loaded, left fielder Kevin Clark lined a ball to right field that went off the tip of Alex Nunez's glove and rolled to the wall, allowing three runs to score as the Jackals extended their lead to 8-4 on Clark's second triple of the night.
Quebec tacked on a run in the top of the eighth with the assistance of three walks, but Jackals closer Romas Hicks entered with two outs and retired all four batters he faced to earn his league-leading 15th save of the season.
The Capitales opened the scoring in the top of the third, taking a 2-0 lead on a pair of RBI singles by Sebastian Boucher and Mike Thompson. From there though, Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik settled down the next 10 hitters he faced as New Jersey scored three runs in the fourth inning against Dan Sausville to take the lead. In the fourth, designated hitter Jacob Butler and shortstop Mike DeJesus led off with singles and, after a sacrifice bunt by catcher Angel Flores, left fielder Kevin Clark rifled a two-run triple into the right field corner to tie the contest. On the next pitch, center fielder Adam Godwin singled Clark home to make it 3-2 New Jersey. That score held until the seventh.
Estanga (2-5) earned the win while Sausville (6-4) absorbed the loss. Pavlik struck out seven batters and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.
Offensively, Clark finished 3-for-3 with two triples of the season and five RBIs.
The Jackals (10-11 second half, 29-38 overall) and Capitales (13-8, 42-25) continue their three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami (2-0, 1.65) to the mound against Quebec righty Karl Gelinas (3-2, 3.27). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com .
