Brockton, MA– For the first time in team history, two Rox players squared off against each other in Olympic competition.

Rox first baseman Craig Lewis, playing on the Australian team, and Rox pitcher Mike Marchesano, representing Italy, faced each other in today's preliminary-round contest.

While Lewis's Australian team got the better of Marchesano's Italian squad, 6-0, Marchesano bested Lewis in their head-to-head matchups.

Marchesano, who went 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four, was tagged with the loss. He got Lewis to ground out in the first, fly out in the fourth, and strikeout in the sixth. Lewis came back with a walk in the eighth off Italy reliever Fabio Milano, eventually scoring the first of Australia's four runs in the inning, and a single off Peter Nyari in the ninth.

Lewis, the 2003 Northeast League Rookie of the Year, is batting .282 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 20 games for the Rox this season. Marchesano, who was 8-7 with a 2.92 ERA last season for the 2003 Northeast League champions, has not yet pitched for the Rox this season as he trained with Italy's Olympic team.

"This must be a dream come true for both players, and we wish them both luck in fulfilling their Olympic dreams," said Rox owner Van Schley. "We know they will represent their countries and the Rox to the best of their abilities."

Australia, now 1-2 in the preliminary round after its victory over Italy and losses to Cuba and Chinese Taipei, takes on Japan Wednesday morning. Italy, 0-3 after losses to Japan, Canada, and Australia, faces the Netherlands later in the day.
