Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA- The Rox long shot hopes for a wild-card berth took a hit Monday night, as they fell 6-3 at home to the New Haven County Cutters before a crowd of 3,387 in Campanelli Stadium.

The Cutters played longball against the Rox, hitting three home runs to build a 5-0 lead against Brockton starter Miguel Baez. Darren Ciraco homered to open the second, Jimmy Hurst hit a two-run home run in the third, and Jeff Brooks hit another two-run home run in the fourth off Baez, who was charged with five runs on six hits and a walk in his four innings of work. Ciraco singled home Brooks, who had doubled, to make it 6-0 in the sixth off reliever Kevin Lynn.

The Rox, who left the bases loaded in the first without scoring, finally broke through against Cutters starter Tony Harden with three runs on five singles in the bottom of the sixth, but reliever Greg McCarthy came in to induce Hector Henriquez to bounce into a force play to end the inning.

McCarthy limited the Rox to one hit while pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, before turning the game over to closer Shane Waroff, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

The Rox are now four games behind Bangor in the wild-card race with 17 games to go.

The Rox (13-16, 40-35) meet the Cutters (6-22, 30-44) at noon Wednesday in a Northeast League first, Grandstand Manager's Day, in which fans will help manager Ed Nottle make strategy decisions.
