
Jackals win with seven unanswered

Little Falls, NJ- Five Jackals had multi hits, in a 7-3 win over the North Shore Spirit.
The Spirit started the scoring in the top of the third inning, with a two out rally. Onix Mercado doubled, scoring two, and Yuri Sanchez tripled deep into center field, pushing across Mercado.
New Jersey would not let the Spirit lead last for long. An RBI double by Wady Almonte, an RBI single by Jay LaFlair, and an RBI triple by Juan Infante evened up the ballgame at three runs a piece.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Jackals broke the deadlock. Back to back doubles by Zack Smithlin and Craig Conway scored two, and made it 5-3, New Jersey.
They padded their lead in the bottom of the six. Three consecutive singles with two outs, led to their sixth run. The RBI went to Conway.
Conway put the ballgame away for the Jackals in the bottom of the eighth, with an RBI single with one down.
North Shore starter Gary Bell lasted only four innings. Bell gave up five earned runs, on nine hits, while walking one and striking out two. He suffered his third loss of 2004.
Josh Miller went seven strong innings for New Jersey in a winning effort. Miller pitched seven complete innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs, while walking none, and fanning two. The win was his team leading seventh of the season.
For New Jersey, Craig Conway went 4-5 with two doubles, and three RBI.
Onix Mercado went 1-4 with a double and two RBI, for the Spirit.
The New Jersey Jackals and the North Shore Spirit play the middle game of their three game set on Wednesday, August 18, 2004. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. In attendance of tonight's ballgame were five former MLB baseball stars. First, Willie Wilson, a former player for Kansas City, Chicago, and Oakland, was in attendance. Wilson was an All-Star in 1982 and 1983. He is also ranked 12th all-time in stolen bases, and won a batting championship in the American League in 1982. Dave Stewart, a former pitcher for Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Texas also made an appearance. Stewart is a four-time, 20 game winner, and also the World Series MVP in 1989. The third former major leaguer was Pete LaCock. LaCock played nine seasons for the Cubs and the Royals, after being drafted as a first round pick in 1970. An additional player was Bob Denier. Dernier played for the Phillies and the Cubs. As an outfielder, he won a gold glove in 1984. It marked the first time a member of the Cubs had won such an award. The final former major league ball player was Paul Mirabella. In a thirteen season career, Mirabella played for Toronto, Milwaukee, Baltimore and Texas.
Playoff tickets are currently on sale for the 2004 season. The Jackals have already clinched a spot, after winning the first half South Division Championship. Their opponent is yet to be determined. The ballclub will be playing at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday, September 8, and Thursday September 9, 2004. Both game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If necessary, a deciding game five will be played on Sunday, September 12, 2004, with a 5:05 p.m. start. Box seats are $11.00 and reserved seats are $9.00. Lawn seats are priced at $6.00, but will only be sold if both box and reserved seats are sold out. No discounts or coupons will be accepted during the playoffs.
New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28. On Thursday August 12, 2004, Rowan also broke the league record for grand slams in a season. In an 8-5 win over Quebec, Rowan belted his third grand slam of 2004 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings
