Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Brandon Barnes was 3-for-5 with a double and a three-run homer, leading the Oklahoma City RedHawks to a 10-6 victory over the Round Rock Express in Thursday night's Pacific Coast League series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (29-39) have lost three straight home games and four of five games this season against the RedHawks (40-27).
Barnes doubled to open the game and later scored on Scott Moore's one-out single. Barnes added his three-run homer in the second inning. Round Rock responded with a Yangervis Solarte sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, but Julio Borbon left the bases loaded with an inning-ending liner to right field.
Round Rock never seriously threatened again until the eighth. Trailing 8-3, the Express loaded the bases with one out. Luis Hernandez singled in a run, and a second run scored on a Leonys Martin fielder's choice. Brad Nelson followed with a two-out RBI single, but Matt Kata grounded out to quell the rally. Oklahoma City put the game away in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out and scoring two runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Adalberto Flores (4-0) was credited with the win in relief; he worked two and one-third innings and did not allow a run or a hit with two walks and no strikeouts. Former Express member Sergio Perez allowed a run on two hits and five walks over three and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts.
Express starter Neil Ramirez (6-7) took the loss; he surrendered seven runs - six earned - on nine hits and two walks over five and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts.
Oklahoma City stretched its lead to 8-1 with a Scott Moore RBI single in the fifth, a Barnes RBI single in sixth and a Mike Hessman two-run single in the sixth. Martin cut the deficit to 8-3 with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Hernandez and Nelson each had two hits, accounting for all but three of Round Rock's seven hits. Martin pushed his hitting and RBI streaks to seven games, and Nelson extended his hitting streak to six games.
Julio Borbon was 0-for-4, ending a 21-game hitting streak one game shy of Solarte's franchise record from earlier this season. Borbon drew a full-count walk in the eighth - his final plate appearance; it was his first walk since May 9, three games before the streak began. Round Rock tied a season high with nine walks; Joey Butler, who leads the PCL with 47 walks, drew three free passes.
Moore was 4-for-4, and Paredes was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Oklahoma City tallied 14 hits on the night.
Round Rock and Oklahoma City continue their four-game series Friday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Martin Perez (3-5, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express opposite RedHawks right-hander Brian Bass (1-0, 5.17 ERA).
