Tucson Padres News Release
The Tucson Padres lost two different leads Wednesday, falling to the Las Vegas 51s, 6-5. The Padres have lost seven consecutive games, a season low for losses in a row, and were swept for the second straight series. The Padres had a 4-2 lead with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded when Anthony Gose hit a chopper to the mound. Tucson starter Kip Wells knocked the ball down, but threw it past first baseman Matt Clark and all three runners scored. The T-Pads scored once in the seventh on a wild pitch but weren't able to plate the tying run in the eighth or ninth innings.
Wells pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and took the loss. Las Vegas starter Jesse Chavez, who was traded for Wells in 2006, pitched 6.2 innings and allowed four earned runs in his seventh victory of the season. Former Major League infielder Jerry Gil picked up his fourth save of the season on the mound for Las Vegas.
Jesus Merchan went 3-for-4 for Tucson and is 5-for-8 since joining the Padres organization from the independent Atlantic League yesterday. Tucson outfielder Daniel Robertson was ejected in the fifth inning by home plate umpire Tripp Gibson after arguing a called third strike.
Next Game: Thursday, June 14 at Reno - Tucson RHP Anthony Reyes (0-3, 7.56) vs. RHP Joe Martinez (5-3, 5.63). Game coverage begins at 5:50 pm on Tejano 1600 AM.
