Infielder Valbuena Called up to Chicago

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of infielder Luis Valbuena from Iowa today, and he is starting at third base for this afternoon's game against the Detroit Tigers.

The 26-year-old was on the Chicago Cubs Opening Day roster after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on April 4, but did not play. Valbuena was optioned to Iowa on April 7, and is batting .303 (64-for-211) with eight home runs and 21 RBI in 58 games with Iowa this season.

Valbuena is a career .226 (166-for-735) hitter with 13 homers and 57 RBI in 229 major league games through parts of four seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2008) and Cleveland Indians (2009-11).

The versatile infielder saw action at shortstop, second and third base with Iowa.

The Iowa Cubs host the Albuquerque Isotopes for game one of a four-game set tonight at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
