Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - New Orleans held on to a 2-1 lead through the first five innings Thursday night until the Redbirds rallied for three runs en route to a 4-2 win at AutoZone Park.
With two on and two outs in the fifth, Eugenio Velez sent the tying run home with a base hit to center field. Jamie Romak followed with a base clearing triple, plating the last two runs on the night, giving the 'Birds their first and only lead needed.
Memphis starter John Gast recovered from a two-run first inning to shut down the Zephyrs through the last eight innings with help from three relievers. Gast picked up his third win, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings while walking two and striking out seven while Adam Reifer nailed down his second save, striking out one in the ninth. Z's starter Brad Hand was pegged with the loss giving up four runs on five hits over five innings while walking six and striking out six.
The 'Birds and the Z's play two scheduled seven-inning games tomorrow as part of a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 5:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans tough the gates will receive a Redbirds team trading card set giveaway.
