Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - On three different occasions, the Dubuque Fighting Saints battled back to tie the game. However, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders converted on a 4-on-3 power play just 1:24 into the extra session to defeat the Saints 4-3 on Saturday night at The Stable. The extra standings point for the Fighting Saint clinched them their third consecutive Dupaco Cowbell Cup, and sixth as an organization.

William Brenner uncorked a shot from the point that changed direction in front of Dubuque goaltender Paxton Geisel and gave Cedar Rapids the victory. Their playoff fate was determined well before the game had ended, but the exclamation point got them into the playoffs. They will face off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

The game would not have gone to overtime without a clutch late goal. Cedar Rapids failed to clear the puck out of the defensive zone, and Samuel Sjölund stepped to the rescue off the bench. He wired a shot that was tipped in the slot by William Hallén to tie the game at three apiece. A late power play gave the Saints a chance to take home the two points in regulation, but it went by the wayside.

Each period brought with it a new challenge.

Cedar Rapids opened the scoring at the 14:40 mark of the opening period as Travis Shoudy stuck with the rebound of a one-handed try by Jake Percival. But, Sjölund responded for the Saints at 18:16. Tristan Lemyre corralled a turnover and set up the defenseman who stepped into a slap shot from the left circle that got past Bruno Bruveris to tie the score.

Percival pounced on a turnover to get Cedar Rapids on top at 4:11. Geisel made a couple of key saves in the second period to keep it a one-goal game. That gave Dubuque the leeway it needed to claw back into the game. Sjölund kickstarted the offense once more as his cross-ice dish found Austin Oravetz sitting alone on the back door for the goal.

Nate Hanley scored in the third period for Cedar Rapids.

Both teams held serve at home in the season series, however, two games went to overtime in Cedar Rapids.

Geisel made 30 saves in the losing effort. Bruveris denied 19 Fighting Saints shots.

Dubuque finishes the regular season with a 40-16-6 record. The 40 wins for the Fighting Saints are the second-most in the franchise's Tier I history. It trails only the 2012-13 Fighting Saints, who won 45 games en route to a Clark Cup championship.

Up next for the Fighting Saints is the second round of the 2022 Clark Cup playoffs. The Saints will either face off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, or the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, in a three-game series starting next weekend.
