Hawks Shutout Caps in Season Finale

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Emmett Croteau and Jakub Tichy combined to make 28 saves on Saturday at Young Arena in a 4-0 Waterloo Black Hawks victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers during the USHL regular season finale.
The result was Waterloo's fifth shutout of the season, ranking second in the league behind only the Anderson Cup Champion Tri-City Storm.
The Black Hawks had 18 shots on goal in the first period, then just six in the second, but it was that segment where Waterloo surged ahead. The lead came only after an apparent Des Moines goal was disallowed shortly after intermission; Joey Muldowney's shot from at sharp angle hit Croteau, deflecting high into the air and coming down into a net that had been knocked off its moorings. Video review overturned an initial "good goal" indication
Instead Waterloo took the lead on a power play at 8:29. Cooper Wylie's errant shot hit the end glass, and ricocheted back into the crease, where it deflected into the net off a Des Moines defender.
Exactly a minute later, James Hong made it 2-0, receiving a tipped pass from Tyler Kostelecky but still scoring from the left circle on the rush.
Another 60 seconds passed and John Waldron built the lead further, stickhandling through traffic in the high slot before rifling a shot to the top corner.
With the Hawks leading 3-0 after 40 minutes, Tichy entered the action for the final period and made five saves. Croteau finished with 23 stops through the second intermission.
The 3-0 score was unchanged until the Buccaneers lifted Lucas Szyszka in a late third period bid to break the shutout. Instead, Jacob Jeannette stole the puck behind the Des Moines net, feeding it to Jake Schneider for a tap-in tally.
The Black Hawks open the 2022 Clark Cup playoffs on the road Monday against the Lincoln Stars. The best-of-three series will be played entirely at the Ice Box. Follow along with live coverage on 1650 The Fan (AM-1650, FM-102.3) or with live video streaming via HockeyTV.com.
