Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints have won the second-most games in the team's Tier I history. Kenny Connors scored the shootout winner in the opening round of the skills competition as Dubuque topped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-2 on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center in front of 2,905 fans. It was the team's eighth consecutive victory.
Connors deliberately moved in on Cedar Rapids goaltender Bruno Bruveris, and then accelerated and pounded the puck five hole to score the only goal of the shootout. Philip Svedebäck stopped all three attempts, including a poke check on David Chen, who needed to score to keep the shootout alive in the third round.
Svedebäck's three saves in the shootout added the exclamation point to a 33 save performance in the Swede's first start since April 8. It was Svedebäck's fourth consecutive victory dating back to March 31. His 2.95 goals against average ranks fifth-best in the USHL, and his .910 save percentage ranks second-best in the USHL.
The Fighting Saints staked out to a 2-0 lead off the bat.
Cedar Rapids swarmed the puck from the get-go, but a scrum late in the first period led to the game's first power play for the Fighting Saints. Nikita Borodayenko found the top corner of the net with helpers from Stephen Halliday and Connor Kurth to open the scoring. The tally was Borodayenko's seventh power play goal of the season, and his fourth goal in the past three games.
Midway through regulation, the Saints got another. Halliday worked wide on the Riders' defense, and fed a pass to Connor Kurth, who slammed home a one-timer from the right circle past Bruveris to give Dubuque a two-goal cushion.
Cedar Rapids scored two goals within four minutes of game time, both on the power play, to claw even.
Travis Shoudy pumped a shot through a screen from a bad angle to cut the lead to one. Then, Adam Flammang ripped a one timer from the high slot at 1:12 of the third period to even the score.
Both teams traded chances in overtime. The Fighting Saints came close on a cross-ice dish from Jackson Hallum to Connors, but the puck bobbled on the chewed-up ice and eliminated the opportunity.
The game featured 9 power play chances total, and 40 minutes in penalties.
The regular season finale will take place at The Stable on Saturday, April 23 at 7:05 p.m. Both the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings and the Dupaco Cowbell Cup will be settled.
