FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts scored five runs in the ninth inning on their way to an 8-2 victory over the TinCaps, Monday at Parkview Field. Cory Spangenberg doubled and tripled for Fort Wayne.
The TinCaps committed five errors; Lansing scored in each inning which featured a Fort Wayne miscue.
Jake Marisnick led off the game reaching on an error. Later in the first inning, Carlos Perez smacked an RBI single to plate Markus Brisker and put the Lugnuts ahead.
In the second, Matt Nuzzo started the inning with a single and went to second on an error. Two batters later, Garis Pena roped an RBI single to center. Marisnick followed with a triple to put the Lugnuts up, 3-0.
Lansing RHP Casey Lawrence retired the first eight TinCaps hitters and didn't allow a run until the sixth; Rico Noel led off with a double and scored when Spangenberg hooked a triple into the right- field corner. Luis Domoromo lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 3-2 game.
Fort Wayne put the tying run in scoring position in the eighth, but could not score.
The Lugnuts blew it open in the ninth. Jack Murphy cracked a one-out single. Pena grounded a ball back to the mound and RHP Deiber Sanchez fired wildly to second, putting runners at first and second. Marisnick then slammed a three-run homer to left-center to put Lansing ahead, 6-2. The Lugnuts tacked on two more runs to balloon their lead to 8-2.
Lawrence (10-8) picked up the win, firing six strong innings. Fort Wayne LHP Mark Hardy (8-9) took the loss.
The TinCaps fell to 22-21 in the half, 52-60 for the season. Lansing improved to 26-17 since the all-star break, 64-46 on the year.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) finish the four-game series Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. TinCaps RHP Adys Portillo (2-11) duels with Lansing RHP Marcus Walden (5-3).
