Dayton Dragons News Release

Eastlake, Ohio-Mitch Clarke fired six scoreless innings and David Vidal hit a two-run home run as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 3-0 on Monday night. The win was the Dragons third straight and their fifth in the last six games. They improved their second half record to 28-15 and increased their playoff cushion to five games with 27 to play.

Clarke (3-1), making only his third start since coming up from Rookie-level Billings, allowed just two hits and one walk over six scoreless innings, striking out six. Dragons relievers Daniel Wolford, Blaine Howell, and Drew Hayes each worked a scoreless inning to close it out as Hayes earned his 18th save by working the ninth inning.

The Dragons took the lead in the second inning when Chris Berset delivered a long sacrifice fly that was caught against the right field with the bases loaded, as Berset just missed a potential grand slam home run. In the third, Vidal belted a two-run home run to right field after Billy Hamilton had reached on an error to make it 3-0. It was Vidal's 16th homer of the year and completed the scoring for the night.

Lake County advanced only two runners as far as second base in the game and did not have a man reach third. The four Dayton pitchers combined for the Dragons second shutout win in the series. Dayton pitchers have not allowed an earned run in 24 innings in the set.

Dayton finished with eight hits. Vidal and Donald Lutz were both 2 for 5.

The Dragons conclude the four-game series with the Captains on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM) as Dayton goes for a sweep. Kyle Lotzkar (1-1, 5.12) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Felix Sterling (2-1, 2.20). The Dragons begin a three-game series at West Michigan on Wednesday. The next home game is Saturday, August 13 vs. Lake County at Fifth Third Field.
