Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (January 8, 2004) â Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that rookie defensemen Trevor Byrne and Mike Hoffman have rejoined the team's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate â the Worcester IceCats. Byrne â on a one-way contract with Worcester â was on loan to the Rivermen, and Hoffman â on an NHL contract with St. Louis â had been reassigned from Worcester by St. Louis.
Byrne â a 6-foot-3, 218-pound native of Weymouth, Massachusetts â returns to Worcester after four games with the Rivermen; for the season, he has registered 17 shots in six games with Peoria. The 23-year-old has four points (2g, 2a) in 23 games with 10 penalty minutes (PIM) with Worcester this season. He was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fifth round (143rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Byrne competed four years at NCAA Division I Dartmouth College. As a senior, Byrne served as Dartmouth's Captain, graduating as the school's all-time leader in games played (130). He was named to the New England Hockey Writers All-Star Team and to the All-ECAC Second Team.
Hoffman â a 6-foot-5, 248-pound native of Scituate, Massachusetts â tallied his first professional points (two assists on January 3 in Toledo) with the Rivermen over five games. The 23-year-old was signed as a free agent by the Blues on December 19 and assigned to Worcester, where he competed in two games and engaged in one fight.
Hoffman played in just three games at the NCAA Division I University of Connecticut this season as a junior with two PIM. Last year (2002-2003), after red shirting as a freshman, he collected 10 points (2g, 8a) in 28 games with 24 PIM.
The Rivermen face off against the Las Vegas Wranglers on the road on Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10. Game times are 9:00 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. The Rivermen host the 2004 Par-A-Dice ECHL All-Star Game & Skills Competition on January 20-21. For tickets, call 673-3200.
