TRENTON, NJ (January 9, 2004) - The Titans returned to Sovereign Bank Arena determined to get back to their winning ways. After having their four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night against the Johnstown Chiefs, the Titans have apparently righted the ship with an impressive 5-0 shutout of the Dayton Bombers.
Titans goaltender Andrew Allen got the start, hoping to make a bid for his third win in as many starts, but the second-year pro looked shaky early. Allen, however, made the saves when he had to and the Titans were able to jump out to a 1-0 at 12:21 of the first period. Scott Bertoli in the near corner found Jeff Schmidt by himself in the slot and Schmidt wristed the puck past former Titan Bujar Amidovski. The Titans would take a two-goal lead late in the first frame, as Jay Leach fed a cross-ice pass to the far post, where Devin Rask tipped it home for his sixth goal of the season.
The Bombers would come out in the second period a renewed vigor, outshooting the Titans 21-10, but it was Bertoli who struck not once but twice on the penalty kill to let the air of Dayton's sails. While killing off a 5-on-3 power play, Chris Pittman shot pass cross-ice to send Bertoli on the breakaway. Bertoli deked around Amidovski and tucked the forehander into the net for a 3-0 lead. Then just 1:22 later, Bertoli would set the record for fastest two shorthanded goals scored by a Titan, as he poke-checked the puck away from Alex Johnstone at the Titans blueline and was off the races, again slipping it past Amidovski to give the Titans a four-goal lead heading into the third period.
In the final twenty minutes, Zultek would add a power play goal and Allen would keep the shutout intact, turning away all 46 Bombers shots and giving the Titans the 5-0 victory. Bertoli extended his point-scoring streak to eight games and the Titans went 8-for-8 on the penalty kill.
The Trenton Titans are a member of the ECHL - America's Premier "AA" Hockey League. The Titans finish their homestand against Dayton Bombers Saturday, January 10 at 7:00pm. For ticket information, call a Titans Sales Representative at 609.599.9500.
