Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, Ga. - Three Rome pitchers held the RiverDogs to three base hits in a quick 1-0 disposal of the RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Rome sweeps the RiverDogs for the second time this season at State Mutual Stadium and has now won eight straight home games against Charleston by a combined score of 64-25 in improving to 30-39. Charleston ends the half on a four-game losing streak to sit at 31-38.
Kyle Rose led off the first for Rome with a single against Mike Solbach and advanced two extra bases on a Charleston error. He would later score on Jordan Kreke's RBI groundout for a 1-0 Braves lead.
That would be the only offense in the contest, as Solbach and Rome's Caleb Brewer locked horns in a memorable pitcher's duel. Brewer (2-0) ended up with the victory, working a season-high 6.0 innings for the Braves, surrendering just three base hits with a walk and two strikeouts, while Solbach (1-2) absorbed a hard-luck loss, tying a season-best 5.0 innings pitched, while allowing just Rose's single and the game's only tally with three walks and one punchout.
Steven Kent worked 1.2 hitless innings for Rome, Tom Berryhill tossed 0.1 of an inning, and Jeff Lorick retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the year.
The RiverDogs left six men on base, including a pair in the eighth inning and stranded 21 runners over the final two games of the series.
All-Star reliever Ryan Flannery did pitch 3.0 flawless innings for Charleston in extending his scoreless streak to 21 innings.
Charleston enjoys a three-day hiatus for the 2010 SAL All-Star Game which takes place at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. on Tues., June 22. Charleston will be represented by infielder Luke Murton, outfielder Zoilo Almonte and relieverFlannery in the league's 51st midsummer classic.
The second half begins on Thurs., June 24, when the RiverDogs host the Greenville Drive, a Boston Red Sox affiliate, at 7:05 p.m. in the first of a five-game series at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
