Suns Hold on for Win over Power

June 20, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (35-34) took an early lead and held on to defeat the West Virginia Power (31-38) by a score of 7-4 on Saturday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV.

Suns second baseman Jeff Kobernus got Hagerstown going with a double to lead off the first inning. It was the fourth consecutive game Kobernus led off with a base hit.

Francisco Soriano followed with a bunt single, and Kobernus scored on a single to right field by Justin Bloxom. The Suns were not finished as JP Ramirez also singled and two batters later Brett Newsome tripled to right field, driving in Ramirez and giving the Suns a 3-0 lead.

Hagerstown tacked on two more on three hits in the second inning against Power starting pitcher Brandon Holden. Holden, however, responded well and allowed just one more run in his six innings of work. The final run against Holden came as Newsome doubled home Ramirez in the 5th inning.

Suns starter Josh Smoker (1-7) threw five strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits for his first victory of the season.

West Virginia brought the game within two runs by scoring three, two of which were earned runs, in bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Patrick Arnold.

The Suns tacked on a run in the top of the eighth to bring the score to the final 7-4 line before Dean Weaver pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season.
