Romanski Spins Six Shutout Innings, Dogs Chop Braves, 4-2

CHARLESTON, SC - Josh Romanski pitched 6.0 innings of scoreless ball, giving up just one hit, to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 4-2 victory over the Rome Braves in front 3,394 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Sunday evening.

Charleston wins for the fourth time in five games to sit at 26-31, while Rome has lost two straight in dropping to 24-33.

Romanski (1-1), who was signed as a free agent by the Yankees in April after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers, was perfect through 4,0 innings before surrendering a Robert Hefflinger double to leadoff the fifth. The former University of San Diego standout did not walk a batter and fanned four in the triumph in recording his first professional victory.

Rob Lyerly drilled a two-out RBI double in the second against Rome's Robinson Lopez to give the RiverDogs a 1-0 lead, and DeAngelo Mack followed with a RBI single to increase the margin to 2-0.

Zoilo Almonte chipped in with a RBI fielder's choice in the third increasing the count to 3-0.

Rome did not score until the eighth inning, when Jace Whitmer legged out an infield RBI single off Ryan Acosta bringing the deficit to 3-1.

The RiverDogs added an insurance run in the bottom half, when Jimmy Paredes singled against Tom Berryhill, stole second, took third on a throwing error and came home on Almonte's sacrifice fly for a 4-1 score.

Ronny Marte entered for the ninth for Charleston, giving up two singles and a sacrifice fly to Jordan Kreke, but induced a game-ending pop out from Braeden Schlehuber to notch his fourth save.

Lopez (2-3) lasted just 3.0 innings and permitting three runs on two hits, but walked a season-high four batters in the defeat.

Lyerly posted his third straight multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with his RBI double, while Almonte added a pair of RBI and has five RBI in his last three games.

Game three of the four-game series is set for Monday with a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Charleston sends right-hander Sean Black (4-3, 4.51) to the mound, while Rome counters with right-hander Arodys Vizcaino (8-3, 2.52), who is the SAL leader in wins.

FUN AT THE BALLPARK: It was Dog Day at The Joe presented by Camp Bow Wow. Fans were encouraged to bring their four legged friend out to the game. Every Sunday is also a Family Sunday sponsored by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). Throughout the season, Sunday home games are packed with fun, from face painting and inflatables on the concourse, to Reading with the RiverDogs and families playing catch in the outfield prior to the game. Plus, the team and Charlie signed autographs after the game. And, there was free parking and kids eat free. Family Sundays are presented by CCPRC and Apex Broadcasting.
