Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

The Kannapolis Intimidators got out of tough situation after tough situation and threw their fifth combined shutout of the season as the game-winning hit occurred in the first inning in a 2-0 win in game one of a four game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats.

In the first inning, Daniel Wagner led the ballgame off with an infield single, Kyle Colligan doubled off the wall in left and Ian Gac doubled down the line in left to plate both Wagner and Colligan to take a 2-0 lead and end the scoring on the day, just four batters into the game. Collin McHugh (2-3) ended up going eight innings in the tough-luck loss. He allowed six hits, two runs with seven strikeouts.

Andre Rienzo got the ball to start the game for the Intimidators (28-28) and he responded by having his first positive start of the season after getting touched up for nine runs in his first 6.2 innings as a starter this season. Rienzo allowed six baserunners in four innings, and stranded runners in scoring position in the second and third.

Cameron Bayne (4-6) then entered the game in the fifth inning with the hope he could take the game through the eighth and that's exactly what he did. After a 1-2-3 fifth inning he stranded runners in scoring position in the sixth and eighth, when they were loaded, and threw four scoreless as he handed the game over to closer Brandon Kloess in the ninth.

Kloess entered the game having not allowed a run since April 26th and got the first out on the first pitch, a fly ball to left. He then however allowed a hit by pitch and a pair of singles to load the bases with one out. With the bases loaded, Kloess struck out the three and four hitters, top prospect Wilmer Flores and Jefrey Marte both looking to end the ball game and sew up his sixth save of the season.

The Sand Gnats (32-25) fall another half-game behind first place Augusta as they went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and they left 13 on base in the game. The Intimidators look to continue the series lead on Monday with a doubleheader as they will play games a both 5:35 and then 30 minutes prior to the end of the game. Matt Wickswat and Justin Collop will be on the hill for Kannapolis opposed by Brandon Moore and Armando Rodriguez.
