Suns Fall Just Short, Lose 4-3 to Shorebirds

The Hagerstown Suns (30-28) tried to rally in the ninth against the Delmarva Shorebirds (24-34), but came one run short, falling 4-3 to even the four-game set at one game apiece.

The Suns got on the board first in the third inning. As Sandy Leon attempted to steal third, catcher Jason Stifler's throw went into left field, allowing Leon to take home and give the Suns a 1-0 lead.

Delmarva countered in the bottom of the fourth off Dan Rosenbaum (1-3). With one away, Kieron Pope hit a solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game at one.

The next half inning, the Suns took back the lead on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kobernus off Delmarva starter Kenny Moreland (1-2) to bring home Eury Perez for to go up 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Shorebirds retook the lead on one swing. With second and third with two away, Brian Conley hit a double to deep left off Suns starter Dan Rosenbaum to bring in Garabez Rosa and Gary Helmick to give Delmarva a 3-2 lead.

Delmarva put an insurance run on in a big way in the bottom of the eighth. In his first at-bat, Steven Bumbry hit a home run to deep right field off reliever Kyle Morrison to put Delmarva up 4-2.

Hagerstown attempted to rally in the top of the ninth off Shorebirds reliever Josh Dowdy. After J.P. Ramirez struck out, J.R. Higley doubled. Brett Newsome followed with a double down the right field line to bring Higley home to cut the deficit to one. After Leon struck out and pinch hitter Steven Souza walked, Kobernus was called out on strikes to end the game, giving Delmarva the 4-3 win.

Moreland got his first win with six innings pitched, allowing two runs with one earned and striking out four. Dowdy got his seventh save, allowing one run in the ninth.

Rosenbaum despite just one earned run allowed gets the loss, with three runs, including two unearned, being charged to him. Morrison pitched two and two-thirds with four strikeouts and one run allowed.

The Suns and Shorebirds will return for game three of the four-game set on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium. Suns southpaw Josh Smoker will go against Shorebirds right-hander Bobby Bundy.
